Coaching Journey

Example of a recommended Coaching Process used in the Professional Service Firm

Based on the experience of coaching in a fast changing environment we recommend a 6-9 month process in order to achieve sustainable results. A possible Coaching Journey could roughly be divided into the 4 phases of:

1. Contracting, Analysis and Clarification of Objectives
2. Intensive Coaching Process
3. Implementation
4. Wrap-up

Detailed explanation of the 4 key stages:

1. Contracting, Analysis and Clarification of Objectives

First Meeting:

A first meeting will take place to see if the client feels comfortable with the coach and includes a first discussion to define the contract and agree on the objective of the coaching process.

Initial Coaching Session:

If the client decides to continue working with the Coach, the first session will start with a diagnostic discussion to agree on the coaching objectives and the appropriate psychometric tools which will help to achieve these objectives. The results of these tests will be fed back to the client during the coaching process in order to enhance their overall effectiveness and awareness of their impact on others.

2. Intensive Coaching Process

1 :1 Coaching Sessions and Triosession with Team Head

The focus of the following session will depend on the agreed objectives. 4-5 sessions between 2-3 hours over a time frame of 3 months are usually recommended. If possible one session should be held with the line manager to discuss the agreed objectives.

3. Implementation

Time to implement the newly learned skills

After 3 months of intense coaching, it is often helpful to give the client some time to implement the newly acquired skills. If questions or unforeseen problems occur, the coach will certainly be there to support the change.

4. Wrap-up

360° Feedback

A 360° feedback, using telephone interviews conducted by the coach has been proven to be a very strong feedback tool. As well as giving information it helps the client’s environment to be more sensitive and supportive to the desired change.

Follow-up session

In a follow-up session the interview data will be anonymously fed back to the client. The results of the 360° will be compared with the agreed initial coaching objectives, and a development plan will be formulated. What the clients can do to continue their personal development will be defined by focusing on their own capabilities and supported by their line manager, peers and - if possible - mentor.
